What's the ideal video length?

Benjamin Staton Updated by Benjamin Staton

Ministry leaders, especially pastors, can get a little long winded. Online video, however, is not the same environment as a Sunday morning worship service.

As you prepare to produce some online video trainings, keep a few of these thoughts in mind.

  1. People have short attention spans.
  2. The internet is a naturally distracting place with lots of other things, pings, and sounds pulling your team member's attention away.
  3. You're competing against Instagram pics and YouTube videos.
  4. Training is, usually, not the most exciting thing to begin with.

Keeping all that in mind, you'll probably want to keep your videos short and to-the-point.

The Magic Video Length for Online Training

Keep your videos between 3 and 8 minutes long. Shorter than 3 minutes may feel like there wasn't anything worth saying. Longer than 8 minutes and you're trying to say too much in one video.

Remember, you can have as many short videos as you want. Breaking longer ideas or topics into multiple shorter videos will help your people learn. It keeps engagement faster paced and avoids the attention drift that happens on longer videos.
